Price Hall circa 1907

March 22, 2013

Another addition to my "unintended" collection of vintage Virginia Tech postcards.

Price Hall, circa 1907, postmarked 1907. A very interesting card showing Price Hall in the same year  of its construction completion, 1907. Notice some of the construction equipment and a couple of horses ready to take construction trash away at the lower left corner of the postcard photo.

Do you see those small windows (in sets of three) sticking out on the roof of the building? When I was working on my Master of Science degree at Virginia Tech, my office windows were fifth set from the left (third set of windows from the right). Yep, Price Hall holds a very special place in my heart.

The inscription on the card itself is rather peculiar. On the front it states "This don't look like much DI". I would have never guessed what DI stands for but lucky for me the person who wrote on the card left a clue... On the back of the card it reads:

"Hello got your postal, and sent you another, I guess it (must) have been misplaced, as I did not get a Answer"

addressed to "Miss Eva V(ru)berger, Dublin" and below it "Dublin Inst". So, there you have it... DI = Dublin Institute. Dublin Institute? I have never heard of it. Was that a college, academy, or some other institute of higher learning? Apparently not. It took some time to research but I found this:

"Dublin Institute is located in a beautiful eminence overlooking the thriving town of Dublin, Virginia, and is one of the most prosperous preparatory schools in the State. Last session enrollment reached 227 students and the graduating class numbered 21 students. Nearly all these graduates will enter our best colleges and universities, all of which give due credit to the work done at the Dublin Institute.

The Institute is co-educational and has separate dormitories for the girls and boys. An unique feature of the school is to be instituted with the opening of next session; the younger boys are to be given dormitory to themselves, and for them a handsome, commodious building  is now being erected, The faculty of teachers, who are men and women of large experience, and represent our best colleges and universities, live with the pupils in the dormitories, and exercise a most faithful and sympathetic guardianship over them at all times. The superior advantages and moderate rates maintained at the Institute will continue to increase the enrollment. $144 pays all expenses for full session of nine months
