Random Photo: Ring Dance Fireworks and Blood Moon (October, 2014)

October 09, 2014

Just a few random photos that I took this month... Ring Dance Fireworks for the premiere of the Class of 2016 rings. Burruss Hall in glow of search lights, and a lunar "trifecta" consisting of blood moon during total eclipse and just prior to selenelion.

If you enjoy my photography, please consider purchasing a VT photo calendar or my second book of Virginia Tech photography. You will gain a wonderful coffee-table book to enjoy and to show your guests and at the same time enable me to continue with my work. Just to clarify - I am *NOT* a professional photographer, just an amateur like yourself.  Your support is really what is driving all of this.

A Lunar Trifecta. Blood Moon during Total Eclipse at Selenelion.
A blood moon during October 2014 total lunar eclipse just prior to selenelion, an extremely rare event, that celestial geometry says cannot happen. Selenelion is when the total eclipse of the moon AND the rising sun could be seen simultaneously. Thanks to Earth's atmosphere, both the sun and moon appear "lifted" above the horizon by atmospheric refraction. This allows people on Earth to see the sun for several extra minutes before it actually has risen and the moon for several extra minutes after it has actually set.
